Heavy rainfall regime over North-West India may persist for the next few days while Gujarat in adjoining West India braces for a renewed spell even as last week’s low-pressure area from Bay of Bengal is weakens in strength and intensity over south Uttar Pradesh and adjoining north Madhya Pradesh, an update from India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

As expected, the Bay continues to be in an ‘excited’ state and is ready to pop the next low-pressure area even as an incoming typhoon Kajiki hit the Vietnam coast and a remnant circulation may drift into the Bay. Projections from numerical weather prediction models suggest this could potentially leave the Bay in suspended animation for better part of this week.

More rain likely

This could lead to formation of weather-friendly circulations in the Bay with the odd ‘low’ being thrown in, sending in rain wave into East and Central India as well as parts of North-West India during this period. On Monday, the IMD pointed to presence of circulation over north-west Bay off Odisha-West Bengal and its deepening as next ‘low’ during the next couple of days.

The backbone monsoon trough passed through Bikaner, Jaipur, Agra, Prayagraj, Daltonganj, Jamshedpur, Digha and thence southeastwards to north-east Bay. The eastern end of the trough dipping in this manner in the Bay is always fraught with the prospect of formation of helpful cyclonic circulations/’low’ and triggering of heavy rain over the core monsoon region.

Monsoon trough

The monsoon trough now runs from a cyclonic circulation over south Haryana and adjoining north-east Rajasthan to the cyclonic circulation over north-west Bay off Odisha-West Bengal coasts across south Uttar Pradesh; north-east Madhya Pradesh; north Chhattisgarh; Jharkhand; and southern parts West Bengal leaving under its footprint almost entire northern half of the country.

An incoming western disturbance on Monday promises to escalate rains over North-West India, with the IMD predicting isolated very heavy rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir; Himachal Pradesh; Punjab; Haryana; Chandigarh; and West Rajasthan on Monday and Tuesday; over East Rajasthan for three days from Monday; and over Uttarakhand on Friday and Saturday. Isolated heavy rainfall is warned over along the hilly terrains of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and plains of East Rajasthan for next seven days.

Heavy rain for Gujarat

In a similar manner, the spell of heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Gujarat during next seven days with very heavy rainfall over the region for three days from Monday. This is a natural corollary of circulations from incoming ‘low’s from the Bay head westward across Central India to this region. Heavy rainfall is over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra for next seven days.

South Peninsula is the other major geographical region benefiting from emerging flurry of activity in the Bay with the IMD predicting heavy rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over Kerala and Mahe for four days from Tuesday; adjoining Coastal Karnataka for five days from Tuesday; interior Karnataka; Tamil Nadu and Telangana on Wednesday and Thursday; and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam for three days form Monday.
