DPIIT in talks with other Ministries on Budget promise of sharing Gati Shakti data with private sector

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has initiated talks with various ministries and departments to take forward the Budget 2026 promise of allowing the private sector limited access to Gati Shakti data and maps, sources said.

“Some departments like Post are ready to start sharing their data and maps soon while some others that have greater sensitivities, like defence, have security related concerns that will be taken care of,” a source tracking the matter said.

It may take some more time to get the exercise off the ground, but DPIIT is consistently working on it, the source said.

“For furthering PPPs (public-private partnerships) and assisting the private sector in project planning, access to relevant data and maps from the PM Gati Shakti portal will be provided,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her Budget speech.

‘No direct access’

Earlier, DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia had said that the options for sharing of data included allowing the private sector to download the matter it wanted from the Gati Shakti portal, allowing them to work on the platform to get their information without downloads or not giving them direct access but extracting the information for them based on their demand.

“Most of the data and maps to be provided to the private sector would most likely be extracted information as direct access provision may be less secure,” another source said.

The private sector could greatly benefit from the data layers in the Gati Shakti portal, like track length details, railway stations, dedicated freight corridor, good sheds, national and state highways/ district layers, MMLPs (Multi Modal Logistics Parks), ware houses, existing airports from different ministries. This would help the industry to optimise last mile delivery services, develop infrastructure-based apps, smart city solutions and tech driven logistics management and also enable them for informed decision and better planning in healthcare sector, disaster management, agriculture sector, and food distribution, per the government.
