Chennai Metro Rail Limited has launched three simultaneous feasibility studies to define Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) networks that will link cities of Chennai and Coimbatore with their neighbouring regional centres. The RRTS is envisioned as a semi-high-speed/high-speed (160–200 km/h and above), rail-based system that can carry large passenger volumes over inter-city distances in 30-60-minute trip times, much faster than road travel, says a release.

Corridors under study are Chennai – Chengalpattu – Tindivanam – Villupuram (170 km); Chennai – Kanchipuram – Vellore (140 km) and Coimbatore – Tiruppur – Erode – Salem (185 km), says a release.

CMRL has appointed Balaji Railroad Systems Private Limited as the Feasibility-Study Consultant for the three assignments.

Consultants will study alternate options of route for each planned RRTS lines, choosing station points, depot and smooth change-over points with other transport modes. This study will decide whether tracks should run on-ground, raised, or underground, land needs, environmental issues and broad project cost, the release said.

RRTS is planned to decongest the city by allowing faster reach to city centre from nearby cities and industrial areas. This RRTS initiative reaffirms government’s commitment to delivering forward-looking, inclusive transport solutions that spur economic growth and enhance quality of life throughout Tamil Nadu, says the release.
