Stakeholders in the West Kochi area have called for the urgent introduction of affordable water-based transport services to support both residents and businesses in the region.
A request in this regard has been taken up at a meeting organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry with Loknath Behera, chairman and managing director of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd.
Highlighting the importance of strengthening connectivity in Mattancherry, Behera said new water services will be added with Thoppumpady and Edakochi terminals scheduled for completion by 2027.
Emphasising Mattancherry’s role as a commercial hub, he noted the importance of reviving traditional grain trade and ensuring that transport facilities align with the area’s economic potential. He stressed the need for research and public participation to design services that effectively meet community needs.
Rajkumar Gupta, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the historic coastal region of Mattancherry, known for its canals and waterways, is set to receive renewed focus on transport infrastructure as part of Kochi’s broader development agenda. Recognizing the area’s commercial importance and cultural heritage, there is an urgent need for reliable and affordable water-based transport services.
“What we need is simple but crucial: a regular, reliable boat service that common people can actually afford. A service that doesn’t stop when the tide is high or low, and one that connects seamlessly with other Water Metro jetties nearby”, Gupta said.
Vice President Chirag J Shah also spoke.
