UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in India for a two-day official visit with a strong delegation of over 100 British entrepreneurs focussed on strengthening trade and investment partnership with the country.
Representatives of prominent British entities such as Rolls Royce, British Telecom, Diageo, London Stock Exchange and British Airways are part of Starmer’s delegation.
India and the UK signed a free trade agreement (FTA) earlier this year which aims to double bilateral trade by 2030. The UK PM is keen on ensuring that industry on both sides is well positioned to utilise the pact once it is ratified by the British Parliament, sources said.
“Warm welcome to PM Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom!..
This is PM Starmer’s first visit to India. This visit marks a new chapter in our strong & dynamic India-UK partnership,” posted MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on social media platform ‘X’ on Wednesday morning.
Starmer will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in Mumbai and also interact with the industry.
The British PM was received at the Mumbai airport by Governor of Maharashtra and Gujarat Acharya Devvrat.
“Visit seeks to build on the momentum from the UK-India trade deal, signed in July, which will lower tariffs and open up access for British businesses to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world,” per a statement issued by the UK government on Tuesday.
The UK PM will seek to unlock new opportunities, secure investments and seal deals that drive growth and create jobs for British people, it said.
