Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has raised apprehensions over the reported move of some low cost carriers to suspend its operations from Cochin International Airport Ltd by next year, citing high landing and operational charges which is unviable for LCC models.

In a representation to S.Suhas, Managing Director, CIAL, TAFI office bearers urged the airport authorities to consider revising or rationalising airport charges (at least for LCCs) to retain existing carriers and encourage new airlines to operate from Kochi. Sustaining connectivity is critical for tourism, business travel and the NRI community, TAFI said.

As one of India’s most important gateways for tourism and NRI travel, Kochi holds tremendous potential for growth and addressing a few operational challenges can significantly enhance stakeholder confidence.

P.P.Augusthy, chairman, TAFI Kerala pointed out that there have been instances of sudden cancellations by certain LCC airlines and there was no airline representatives on the floor to support stranded passengers. He requested CIAL’s support to ensure that airlines maintain minimum duty staff during operational hours to assist passengers in such situations.

Citing limited brand presence at CIAL duty free outlet with very few attractive product categories, he suggested introducing more international brands, electronics, travel essentials, confectionery, beauty and skincare labels which would significantly enhance the airport’s commercial appeal and passenger satisfaction.

Passengers and travel agents have reported that the *0484 Aero Lounge* pricing is significantly higher compared to similar lounges at other airports as well as nearby hotels offering equivalent facilities. “We request a review of pricing and improved last-mile access services to the lounge,” he added.

For large MICE groups, timely coordination among airport authorities, airlines, lounges, duty-free retail and service providers is essential. TAFI proposed the creation of a structured communication network to alert stakeholders in advance about major group movements so they can scale up staff and services accordingly.
