Southern Railway records 4.5% originating earnings growth in FY25
In 2024-25, Southern Railway (SR) recorded originating earnings of ₹12,659 crores reflecting a growth of 4.5 per cent over previous year. In the current financial year also, up to July 2025, SR registered more than 5 per cent growth in earnings.
SR maintained punctuality of 91.2 per cent, despite an increase in train services and passenger numbers, said its General Manager RN Singh in his Independence Day speech on Friday.
During 2024-25, SR added three pairs of new trains, and operated about 5,150 trips of Special Trains over & above the regular trains, to cater to the increased demand during festival/vacations. 108 general coaches have been added across 90 trains to manage extra demand.
“Four Vande Bharat Trains have been augmented to 20 coaches & 16 coaches. 34 trains have been converted from ICF coaches to modern LHB coaches and in next 3 years, almost all trains will be made LHB,” he said.
To improve mobility, during the last three years, SR increased the train speeds over 2,800 route kms from earlier 80/90 kmph to 110/100 kmph and 415 Route kms from 110 kmph to 130 kmph. The work is underway to increase the speed to 130 Kmph on the Jolarpet-Coimbatore route, he added.
As part of infrastructure development, during 2024-25, SR has completed Chennai Beach – Chennai Egmore 4th Line, Chinnasalem- Porpada kurichi New Line, Peralam – Karaikal New Line & new Pamban Bridge, he said.
