Even as the land acquisition process for the greenfield Parandur airport is underway, the Tamil Nadu government has also kicked off the process of acquiring land for developing the Global City at Maduranthagam Taluk in Chengalpattu district, about 90 km south of Chennai.
A cluster of six villages – Palayanur, Janikipuram, Attimanam, Padalam, Kallapiranpuram and Pullparakoil – have been identified and the State through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Corporation (TIDCO) will acquire 787.52 hectares of land in these villages, sources said. The maximum acquisition is planned at Palayanur (406 hectares) followed by Janikipuram (162.65 hectares), they add.
Government sources confirmed that a communication identifying the clusters has been sent to the Chengalpattu Collector as a part of the land acquisition process.
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced in the Legislative Assembly during the Budget Speech 2025 that a 2,000-acre Global City will be developed near Chennai. The city will have IT parks, trade zones and residential complexes.
Connectivity
TIDCO will soon commence works on Phase-I, ensuring connectivity with Chennai through metro, road and express bus services, added sources.
If the project takes off, it could be the first by the State government.
Earlier, two such attempts – one in 1972 to develop a satellite town at Maraimalai Nagar, and another in Manali New Town in North Chennai in the early 1990s – had failed.
The Mahindra World City at Maraimalai Nagar and Sri City at Tada in Andhra Pradesh, bordering Gummudipoondi in Tamil Nadu, are the two successful integrated cities.
