Seafood exporters seek nil duty access to European Union

The Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) has urged the Centre to make provisions for allowing seafood exports from India to the European Union at “nil” duty rates and to remove all non-trade barriers, so that shipments to the region can increase manifold in the coming years.

G. Pawan Kumar, president of SEAI, stated that this would help achieve the industry’s objective of market diversification and enable Indian seafood to attain a leading position in the EU market. “We seek the active support and assistance of the Union government in this regard,” he said.

The Association also hailed the support extended by the Commerce Ministry to the seafood exporting fraternity in the aftermath of the imposition of high tariffs by the US.

The listing of 102 new fishery units by the European Union has led to a substantial increase in exports to this important market.

Exports to the EU increased from 137,139 tonnes during April–November 2024 to 176,367 tonnes in the corresponding period of the current year, registering a growth of 28 per cent in quantity terms.

In value terms, exports rose by 37.8 per cent, from $716.95 million in April–November 2024 to $988.22 million during April–November 2025.
