Retail inflation rises to 1.33% in December

Retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 1.33 per cent in December as against 0.71 per cent of November, Statistics Ministry reported on Monday.

“An increase of 120 basis points is observed in food inflation in December, 2025 in comparison to November, 2025. The increase in headline inflation and food inflation during the month of December, 2025 is mainly attributed to increase in inflation of Personal care and effects, Vegetables, Meat and fish, Egg, Spices and Pulses and Products,” a statement by the Ministry said.

Here are the highlights:

  • Rural Inflation: An increase in headline and food inflation in rural sector observed in December, 2025. The headline inflation is 0.76 per cent in December while it was 0.1 per cent in November. During this period, the food inflation recorded at (-)3.08 per cent as against (-) 4.05 per cent.
  • Urban Inflation: An increase from 1.4 per cent to 2.03 per cent is observed in headline inflation of urban sector. Increase is also observed in food inflation from (-)3.6 per cent in to (-) 2.09 pe cent
  • Education Inflation: Education inflation rate is 3.32 per cent as against 3.38 per cent.
  • Health Inflation: Health inflation rate declined to 3.43 per cent from 3.6 per cent.
  • Transport & Communication: Transport & communication inflation rate dipped to 0.76 per cent from 0.88 per cent.
  • Fuel & light: Fuel & light inflation rate also dropped to 1.97 per cent from 2.32 per cent
