Lowest minimum (night) temperatures over plains of the country dropped well below 10°C to 7.5°C at Adhampur Air Force base for 24 hours ending on Monday morning even as moderate fog enveloped parts of Himachal Pradesh in clear signs that the 2025 winter season may have announced its arrival.

The highest maximum temperature of 35.6°C was reported at Erode in Tamil Nadu. Shallow fog conditions were reported in the east across Assam and Meghalaya; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura; Bihar; East Uttar Pradesh; Himachal Pradesh; and West Madhya Pradesh, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Anticyclone settles

The winter-setting anticyclone with a footprint extending from the Middle East looked to having settled over North-West India across international border across Rajasthan and Gujarat. Higher pressure associated with anticyclone forces prevailing cold air to sink down to ground, bringing down ambient temperature levels.

Passing western disturbances with warm steamy front ends from moisture picked along the way (the Mediterranean and north Arabian Sea) may trigger showers ideal for standing Rabi crop. But barren north-westerly winds blowing in mainly from Afghanistan, will cause mercury to plunge, generating hail or frost.

Severe cold wave

The IMD has forecast cold wave to severe cold wave conditions (lower by 5℃ than normal) for three days over West Madhya Pradesh while cold wave conditions may prevail over parts of Haryana Chandigarh and Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. These conditions may be felt over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for four days; Vidarbha for two days from Wednesday; and over West Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Friday.

No large change seen

No large change in night temperature is expected over North-West India during next 4-5 days, signalling no entry of any modulating western disturbance. In the absence of moisture and clouds, night temperatures may fall further by 2-3°C. No large change in minimum temperature is indicated either over Maharashtra or Gujarat.

South Peninsula

Night temperatures may fall by 3-4°C over Telangana for 2-3 days and no large change thereafter during subsequent four days. This means winter could seep into parts of South Peninsula in the absence of rain bearing easterlies or north-easterlies from the Bay of Bengal. The northeast monsoon is currently active over southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as is clear from satellite pictures on Monday.

Isolated heavy rain

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rain over Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and Thursday while light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms may spread out to most/many places. Isolated heavy rain is also forecast over Kerala and Mahe on Monday and Tuesday, and Lakshadweep on Monday. Thunderstorms and lightning may roam Tamil Nadu for four days, and over Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep for two days.
