Modi, Bhutanese King Wangchuk discuss cooperation in multiple sectors

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck discussed cooperation in multiple such as energy, connectivity, technology, defence and capacity building in a meeting on Tuesday.

Following the delegation level talks, the two inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, developed jointly by the two governments.

“Had a very good meeting with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan. We covered the full range of India-Bhutan relations. We discussed cooperation in sectors like energy, capacity building, connectivity, technology, defence and security,” Modi said in a post on `X’ on Tuesday.

The PM, who is on a two-day official visit to Bhutan, underlined that India was proud to be a key partner in the country’s development journey. India’s closeness to Bhutan and participation in development projects in the country, in line with its `neighbourhood first’ policy. It is especially important given China’s growing influence in the country.

Apart from cooperating in energy, the two countries are also focusing on enhancing connectivity, Modi said. “Connectivity creates opportunity, and opportunity creates prosperity,” the PM emphasised. Under this vision, a decision has been made to connect the cities of Gelephu and Samtse to India’s vast railway network, he said. “The Prime Minister noted that upon completion, this project will significantly improve access for Bhutanese industries and farmers to India’s large market,” per a statement issued by the PMO.

Both countries are also making rapid advances in border infrastructure. Referring to the visionary Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative, the PM said India would fully support its development. “He announced that India will soon establish an immigration checkpoint near Gelephu to further facilitate visitors and investors,” the statement noted.

The PM also laid emphasis on the cultural ties between the two countries and said that the Indian government will make land available in Varanasi for the construction of a Bhutanese temple and guest house. This was being done in response to the aspirations of the Bhutanese people, the release stated.

“The progress and prosperity of India and Bhutan are deeply interconnected,” the Prime Minister said, adding that in this spirit India announced a support package of ₹10,000 crore last year for Bhutan’s Five Year Plan. He highlighted that this fund is being utilised across sectors—from roads to agriculture, financing to healthcare—enhancing the ease of living for Bhutanese citizens.
