With some regions in the State reporting bumper maize yields, the Telangana Government has decided to enhance the per-acre eligibility limit to 25 quintals from 18 quintals as maize procurement picks up.
The State’s total maize area reached 2.60 lakh hectares, an increase of two lakh hectares compared to the same period last year. The government is planning to procure 8 lakh tonnes of maize through 125 procurement centres.
The government plans to procure 8 lakh tonnes, taking into account the depressed prices. It expects an output of 11.50 lakh tonnes during the season.
Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao appealed to the Union Government to assist the State in the procurement of maize. He wrote a letter to Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh seeking his intervention in this regard.
Meanwhile, Telangana Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has appealed to the Union Government to relax the norms related to moisture levels. “The State reported damage to paddy, maize, and cotton crops in an extent of 1.10 lakh acres. In order to bail out the farmers who suffered heavily, the Union Government should consider relaxing the moisture levels in paddy and cotton,” he said in the letter.
Taking part in a review meeting on Tuesday, the Agriculture Minister said that the State would bring pressure on the Union Government to increase the yield limits in cotton procurement to 12 quintals an acre from the existing 7 quintals,” he said.
