The Kochi Water Metro has achieved a milestone of carrying more than 5 million passengers within just 29 months of commencing operations.

This achievement is a rare distinction for a light transport project within such a short span of time, said a press note.

Loknath Behera, Managing Director said that Kochi Water Metro has been able to attract and serve so many passengers despite operating on a limited route is a testament to the high-quality travel experience we deliver.

Launched on April 25, 2023, Kochi Water Metro has swiftly transformed into a popular mode of travel — from ordinary island residents to visiting dignitaries. Its efficient project execution and service excellence have positioned it as a model, with plans to replicate the system in 21 more locations across the country. The project has also drawn attention from abroad, with the World Bank expressing willingness to collaborate, he said.

Currently, Kochi Water Metro operates 20 boats across terminals at High Court, Fort Kochi, Vypeen, Bolgatty, Mulavukad South Chittoor, Cheranalloor, Elur, Vyttila, and Kakkanad.

Construction of five additional terminals is in the final stages, with Mattancherry and Willingdon Island terminals expected to be commissioned shortly. Terminals at Kumbalam, Paliyamthuruth, and Kadamakudi are also nearing completion.

The service now operates 125 trips daily from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm across five routes spanning 24 km. The growth in passenger numbers highlights its rapid acceptance. One million passengers in 107 days; 2 million in the next 95 days; 3 million in 185 days; 4 million in 160 days; 5 million in the following 161 days.
