Kerala Agri varsity launches drone pilot training programme
The Kerala Agricultural University has made a significant stride in advancing agri-technology with the launch of its first Drone Pilot Training Programme.
The programme, inaugurated at the KAU Agri Business Incubator (R-ABI), Vellanikkara, is being implemented under the NABARD-funded project “Empowering Agriculture through Innovation.”
Jointly organised by the KAU Agri Business Incubator (R-ABI) and Modha Aero Academy Pvt. Ltd., the initiative marks a new chapter in integrating drone technology with agricultural research, training, and field applications, paving the way for smarter and more efficient farming practices in the state.
Nagesh Kumar Anumala, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Kerala Regional Office, highlighted that the project represents NABARD’s commitment to fostering innovation and youth entrepreneurship in agriculture. Drone technology is the future of precision farming. This initiative will create skilled professionals and agripreneurs who can bring technology directly to the farmgate, he said, assuring continued NABARD support for sustainable agri-innovation programmes.
K. N. Anith, Director of Research, KAU, noted that the university’s entry into DGCA-licensed drone pilot training marks a new era of technology-led transformation in Kerala’s agriculture. KAU has standardized several drone-based delivery systems for farm applications. “With this RPTO facility, we are now creating certified manpower capable of taking these innovations to the field, thereby enhancing efficiency and profitability for farmers,” he said.
Mani Chellappan, Dean, College of Agriculture, Vellanikkara emphasized that technology adoption is critical to addressing challenges of labour shortage and farm efficiency in Kerala.
The training programme aims to build certified drone pilots for agricultural and commercial applications, equipping participants with skills in drone operation, maintenance, and data-driven farm management.
