Iraq buyers lift orthodox tea prices at Kochi auctions 

Demand from overseas buyers especially for lower level orthodox leaf varieties lifted tea prices in Kochi auctions.

The average price realisation was up by ₹4 in sale 41, thanks to increased purchase by Iraq buyers which is sustaining the market. The availability of quality teas in the auction platform also boosted the demand from overseas buyers, traders said. This was evident from the 93 per cent sales out of the offered quantity of 2,23,094 kg.

The auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said that exporters to CIS and Middle East countries were active, while there was some upcountry enquiry as well.

The market for whole leaf was irregular and lower, while brokens was firm to dearer especially for lower end teas which appreciated more.

CTC leaf good brokens dear

In CTC leaf, good brokens was dearer, while medium brokens and Fannings was firm to dearer. The quantity offered was 36,500 kg.

In CTC dust, liquoring teas witnessed a strong demand with teas up to ₹172 was firm to dearer. The offered quantity was 5,16,196 kg with a sales percentage of 92. All blenders together absorbed 63 per cent of the total CTC quantity sold.

In orthodox dust, the market for clean black primary grades was dearer. The quantity offered was 4,500 kg. Upcountry buyers were active.
