IndiGo has signed an MoU with China Southern Airlines for a codeshare partnership that will increase its reach and offer better travel options to its customers.
The agreement was signed today following the launch of IndiGo’s Delhi-Guangzhou flight. IndiGo’s daily service from Kolkata to Guangzhou started last month.
IndiGo said the partnership aims to offer enhanced travel options and integrated travel itineraries to customers traveling between India and China on the joint network of both airlines. Customers will also benefit from check-in process among others, it said.
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, said, “We are happy to join hands with China Southern Airlines as we enhance connectivity between India and China.”
Han Wensheng, president and CEO of China Southern Airlines said, “China Southern Airlines highly values the development potential of the Indian market. Through cooperation with IndiGo, we will be able to further leverage each other’s advantages, offer a wider range of travel products, and give new momentum to the economic, cultural and aviation exchanges between the two countries.”
A codeshare is a marketing agreement between two carriers which allows them to sell tickets on each others’ networks.
Thus such agreements provide airlines better reach, improved revenue opportunities and brand awareness in new markets.
At present IndiGo has codeshare agreements with 12 carriers. IndiGo signed an MoU for Greece’s Aegean Airlines for a codeshare pact in September as it prepares for its maiden service to Athens next January.
While codeshares contribution to IndiGo’s revenue is in single digits, it is growing, Elbers had said in post result conference call on May.
