India’s tea output rose 14 per cent in July to 171.72 million kgs (mkg) compared with 150.36 mkg a year ago, despite a decline in output in the southern parts of the country due to adverse weather conditions.

The cumulative production during the January-July period this year was 641.44 mkg against 564.44 mkg a year ago.

Tea production in South was down by about a tenth in July at 20.36 mkg over 22.79 mkg a year ago, due as the output was impacted mainly in Tamil Nadu due to excess rains and less number of sunny days during the period.

In Assam, the total production was up 24 per cent during July at 98.57 m kg over79.55 mkg a year ago. This comprised the production of 93.40 mkg in Assam Valley and 5.17 mkg in Cachar.

Darjeeling output up

Similarly, in West Bengal, the tea production increased by 9.4 per cent in July to 47.68 mkg (43.59 mkg a year ago). The production in the Dooars region was up 13 per cent at 26.53 mkg, while in Terai it was 20.21 mkg and in Darjeeling, 0.94 m kg. The other producing regions of North India saw an increase in output at 5.11 m kg (4.43 m kg)

In Tamil Nadu, the production declined by 15 per cent to 15.44 mkg on adverse climatic conditions over 18.27 mkg last year. However, in Kerala, the output was up marginally at 4.62 mkg (4.26 mkg) and in Karnataka, at 0.29 mkg (0.26 mkg).

Category wise, the production of CTC teas increased by 12.43 per cent to 150.99 mkg in July 2025 against 134.29 mkg a year ago. The output of Orthodox teas was up 31 per cent at 18.13 m kg (13.85 mkg) and green teas by 17 per cent at 2.60 mkg.
