India has said that it is studying the implications of the recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies and will continue to be guided by its energy security needs even as US President Donald Trump said Delhi has been “very good” on the issue of Russian oil.

“We are studying the implications of the recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies. Our decisions naturally take into account the evolving dynamics of the global market,” External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said responding to questions on how India would react to the sanctions.

India’s position on the larger question of energy sourcing is well known, he said. “In this endeavour, we are guided by the imperative to secure affordable energy from diverse sources to meet the energy security needs of our 1.4 billion people,” Jaiswal added.

India’s sourcing of oil from Russia, which supplies more than 35 per cent of the country’s total crude imports, is likely to be affected by the US sanctions on the two major oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, as the measures also apply on its subsidiaries and affiliates, a source told businessline

No knee-jerk reactions

“India’s imports from Russia is likely to be hit because of the sanctions on oil companies. But there won’t be any knee-jerk reactions. Delhi will wait and see how the situation evolves globally,” the source said.

The US is trying to put pressure on India to stop its Russian oil purchases and Trump said several times that Delhi was set to bring down its imports from the country to nothing. On Thursday, he reiterated his claim and said that India had been “very good” on the issue.

“He (Chinese President Xi) has been buying oil from Russia for a long time. It takes care of a big part of China. And, you know, I can say India’s been very good on that front. But we didn’t really discuss the oil. We discussed working together to see if we could get that war finished.”

Trump has been claiming for the past few days that Delhi has assured him that it will significantly reduce its oil imports from Russia,” Trump told reporters.

Of the 50 per cent import duties imposed by the US on Indian goods, 25 per cent are in the form of penalties for purchase of oil from Russia.
