Gujarat Government has announced that it will start buying ₹2,669 crore worth of chickpeas (chana) and mustard at minimum support price (MSP) from 4.65 lakh farmers across the state. The procurement is expected to begin at 266 centres from April 21.

The State Government has targeted to purchase 3.36 lakh MT (metric tonnes) of chickpea worth ₹1,902 crore worth on MSP. Similarly, it will also buy 1.29 lakh MT of mustard worth ₹767 core from the farmers.

For the Rabi season 2024-25, the Government of India had declared an MSP of ₹5,650 per quintal of chickpea and ₹5950 per quintal of Mustard.

Over 3.36 lakh chickpea-growing farmers have already registered with the State to sell their produce at MSP, while the number of registered mustard-growing farmers were 1.18 lakh. The government will begin the process of buying the chickpeas and mustard from the designated 179 and 87 procurement centres, respectively, from April 21.

During the 2024-25 Rabi season, farmers in Gujarat had sown 8.49 lakh hectares of chickpea which was about 15000 hectares more than the area sown during the last three years. As far as Mustard is concerned, only 2.58 lakh hectares were sown during the last Rabi season, a decline of almost 16 percent in the sowing area, when compared to the 3.07 lakh hectares of average area sown during the last three years in the state.
