Gujarat govt targets historic 66 lakh tonne groundnut production this year
Gujarat, which accounts for over 50 per cent of India’s total groundnut production, is projected to achieve a record-high of 66 lakh tonne of groundnut this year, according to the State government.
Last year, the groundnut production in the State stood at 52.20 lakh tonne and as per preliminary estimates, Gujarat is expected to achieve 26 per cent more production this year. During the ongoing Kharif season, groundnut has been sown in 22 lakh hectares which is about 15 percent more than 19.1 lakh hectares sown during 2024-25. This year, more than 16.64 hectares has been sown in Saurashtra region which is also a primary cotton-growing region. Close of 40,000 hectares of the groundnut crop is in North Gujarat region, parts of which have been flooded due to heavy rains last week.
“Though the government has estimated a bumper production of groundnut this year, it remains to be seen how the situation pans out with several areas of North Gujarat and Kutch — which grow a good amount of groundnut and cotton crops — getting flooded. Farmers in the Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch districts have told us of crop loss during our visit to this region a couple of days ago,” says Sagar Rabari, who heads Khedut Samaj — a farmers’ body — and is also associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat.
Last year, the groundnut production in the State stood at 52.20 lakh tonne. The State government had bought a record 12.22 lakh tonne of groundnut on Minimum Support Price (MSP) from 3.67 lakh farmers in the State in 2024-25. This purchase was worth ₹8,295 crore. This year too, the government plans to make similar purchases.
On Friday, the last date for registration of farmers willing to sell their Kharif crop on MSP, was extended by one week, to September 22. This year, looking at the bumper groundnut production, the State government is expected to buy groundnut, Moong, Urad and Soybean on MSP.
