Gujarat announces ₹10,000 cr relief package for farmers affected by unseasonal rains; highest-ever says govt
Gujarat government on Friday evening announced a ₹10,000 crore relief package — the “largest-ever” to be announced in the state — for farmers affected by unprecedented unseasonal rains this year.
The package has been declared after ministers from the government including Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel personally visited the affected districts and met the farmers who have suffered huge crop loss due to the unseasonal rains not seen in the last two decades, stated an official release from the government. After the recent round of unseasonal downpour, the State government had launched a survey of affected areas which included more than 16,500 villages, spread across 251 talukas of 33 districts and involved 5100 survey teams.
This relief package will provide uniform compensation for both irrigated and non-irrigated crops. The government will provide an assistance of Rs 22000 per hectare, up to a maximum of two hectares per farmer.
On October 20, Gujarat government had already declared a ₹947 crore financial aid package for farmers of the State who were affected by unseasonal rains during the months of August and September. It is, however, not clear immediately if the relief package announced in October will be subsumed in the latest package.
In order to financially support the farmers, Gujarat government on November 5 announced that it will buy ₹15,000 crore worth of Kharif crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from the farmers. The government will begin the procurement of groundnut, moong, urad and soybean from November 9 from 300-odd centres.
