The FMCG industry garnered value growth of 6.2 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in the July-September quarter led by dairy products, staples and chocolates & confectionery categories, according to data sourced from retail intelligence platform Bizom. Urban India continued to lag behind with value growth of 5.4 per cent y-o-y during the September quarter, while value growth of non-urban regions was pegged at 6.7 per cent.

While in the month of July, FMCG industry’s value growth stood at 8.6 per cent, 7.5 per cent in August but fell to 2.4 per cent in September due to GST transition related issues.

While the dairy products segment witnessed value growth of 17 per cent y-o-y during the September quarter, commodities and staples segment grew 11.7 per cent. Chocolates and confectionery segment too witnessed healthy double-digit value growth of 11.7 per cent y-o-y during this period. Packaged foods segment was up 6.7 per cent in terms of value in the September quarter this year compared to the same period last year. However personal care segment growth was comparatively lower at 4.9 per cent during this period, Bizom data revealed.

Beverage industry witnessed a mere 0.3 per cent growth due to inclement weather conditions.

Some key FMCG players have indicated that while demand trends were broadly steady during the September quarter, they witnessed short-term slump in demand due to transition to GST 2.0. Effective September 22, a wide number of essential food and personal care products were put under the 5 per cent GST slab.

“The September quarter was the slowest so far, mainly due to disruptions in early September from changes in GST numbers. While there was strong growth after September 22, the initial slowdown impacted overall monthly performance. With GST-related benefits and a good monsoon, a positive rebound is expected in the coming months,” said Harshit Bora, Head of Analytics at Bizom
