Delhi AQI: Dense fog affected flights at IGI airport
The national capital region experienced dense fog conditions on Monday morning (Dec 29, 2025), disrupting air traffic movement at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).
Accordingly, air traffic movements were impacted as visibility levels dropped sharply, with the runway visual range (RVR) falling to around 50 metres during the early morning hours.
Notably, the airport, on average, caters to 95 flight movements per hour or around 1,200 per day.
As per airport data, there were 128 cancellations as well as eight diversions from the airport till 9.00 a.m.
Meanwhile, readings on flightradar24.com, showed that the time period of average arrival and departure delay rose due to the cascading effect.
The average arrival delay at around 10.15 a.m., stood at about 5 minutes, while the average departure delay was around 26 minutes.
Subsequently, the persistent conditions led the national capital’s airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), to issue an advisory warning of delays and possible cancellations as flight operations shifted to CAT-III (Category III Instrument Landing System) conditions.
Besides, the Ministry of Civil Aviation cautioned that fog conditions across northern India could impact flight operations at select airports and advised passengers to allow additional time for airport arrival and check-in.
On their part, airlines operating out of IGI Airport issued travel advisories to passengers.
According to IndiGo, fluctuating visibility at Delhi and Hindon airports led to changes in flight schedules, adding that operations could remain slower than usual as conditions evolved.
The airline advised passengers to monitor their flight status and offered options to rebook or seek refunds if services were impacted.
Furthermore, Air India said it had taken proactive measures to minimise disruption and assured passengers that ground teams would provide assistance in case of irregular operations.
The airline added that passengers on certain fog-affected flights would receive advance alerts and could change flights or seek refunds without penalty under its ‘FogCare’ initiative.
Additionally, SpiceJet cautioned that poor visibility in Delhi could affect arrivals, departures and consequential flights, asking passengers to keep track of their flight status through official channels.
