CBDT extends tax audit report deadline to October 31 for AY 2025–26, ETCFO

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday announced an extension of the deadline for submitting audit reports under the Income-tax Act, 1961, for Financial Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26).

In an official update on X, the CBDT said the due date for furnishing various audit reports for assessees covered under clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 has been moved from September 30, 2025, to October 31, 2025.

The decision follows repeated appeals from professional bodies, including chartered accountant associations, who flagged difficulties in completing audits within the earlier timeline. The Board acknowledged that floods and other natural calamities across several regions had disrupted regular business and compliance work.

At the same time, the department highlighted that the income-tax e-filing system was functioning smoothly. By September 24, more than 4.02 lakh tax audit reports had been uploaded, including over 60,000 submissions on a single day. As of September 23, taxpayers had filed 7.57 crore income-tax returns.

CBDT confirmed that a detailed notification to formalize the extension will be issued shortly.
