Alaska Airlines asks FAA to ground fleet, citing IT outage
Alaska Air Group Inc. said it had sought a temporary grounding of all planes for its main brand and Horizons Air unit after suffering an IT outage that is impacting flight operations.
The fifth-largest US airline requested the grounding in a notice sent to the US Federal Aviation Administration late Sunday. The carrier warned there would be a “residual impact” to services throughout the evening.
Alaska Air said in a statement it was suffering an IT outage that had been impacting operations since 8 p.m. Pacific time Sunday. “We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska and Horizon Air flights until the issue is resolved,” the company said in the statement.
It’s the second time in just over a year Alaska Air has had to ground its fleet because of IT problems.
In April 2024, the carrier temporarily grounded its fleet after experiencing an issue while upgrading the system that calculates weight and balance.
That disruption came about three months after a door plug on a Boeing Co. plane blew out mid-flight and upended Alaska’s operations.
