After operating metro trains imported by a South Korea firm, Ahmedabad Metro is now set to induct indigenously manufactured coaches from Titagarh Rail Systems’ Kolkata facility in West Bengal. The shift follows Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s visit to the manufacturing unit on Saturday, where he flagged off the first locally produced metro train, marking a key step towards domestic manufacturing in urban transport.

Quoting the chief minister, Gujarat government in an official release stated that the first “Make in India” metro train for Ahmedabad Metro will be delivered to Ahmedabad within a few days after completion of final tests and certification it will be formally inducted into the passenger service. This will be the first of 10 metro trains that Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRCL) will receive from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. The train manufactured from Kolkata will join a set of 32 trains supplied by South Korean firm Hyundai Rotem for Phase-1 of Ahmedabad metro, which include trainsets imported directly from South Korea, an official from GMRCL said. The first train under a Rs 1025 crore contract was shipped from Hyundai Rotem’s Changwon plant to a port in Gujarat in December 2018.

In 2023, Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd had won a ₹350 crore contract to supply 10 metro train sets for Ahmedabad Metro. The remaining nine trains for Ahmedabad will also be supplied by Titagarh in a phased manner over the next 5–6 months. This Kolkata based company has also been awarded a ₹866 crore contract to supply 24 metro trains for the under construction Surat Metro in 2023. Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd was the lone bidder for the Surat Metro tender.

These 10 trains being supplied by Titagarh will meet the additional requirement arising after completion of 21 km of Phase-2 work and with the remaining sections becoming operational soon. At present, the Ahmedabad Metro serves more than 1.6 lakh passengers daily and is witnessing an annual growth of 30–40 percent. The Chief Minister also stated that in the coming days, the Ahmedabad metro rail service will be expanded further, with metro operations also planned to commence in Surat.
