Woman dies of heart attack as doctor watches reels in UP hospital, ET HealthWorld

Agra: A 60-year-old woman, who suffered a heart attack, lay at the emergency ward of Mainpuri district hospital for nearly 15 minutes and died while the doctor on duty allegedly “watched reels” on his mobile phone. Her family said that crucial time was lost because of the negligence of Dr Adarsh Sanger.

Pravesh Kumari was brought to the hospital around noon on Tuesday

Her family alleged that the doctor instructed a nurse to handle the patient instead of attending to her personally. Despite repeated pleas by the relatives, “he did not budge and remained glued to his phone”.

When the patient’s condition worsened and her son raised his voice in protest, Sanger allegedly slapped him, leading to chaos in the hospital. Soon, police came and controlled the situation.

CCTV footage purportedly shows the doctor sitting on his chair and looking at his phone while nurses are handling the patient. The footage also shows the doctor slapping the patient’s son. The clip has been widely circulated on social media, creating public outrage.

The woman’s son, Guru Sharan Singh, said, “I, along with my brothers, brought my mother to the emergency ward of the Mainpuri govt hospital. She was serious and we placed her on the stretcher. The compounder and the nurse on duty were attending to other patients, but the doctor was sitting at his desk and was busy using his mobile phone. He passed orders to the compounder and the nurse, and treated my mother as if she was a patient suffering from cough and cold. He said my mother would be fine after the nurse attended to her.”

Singh added: “My brothers and I were in complete distress. We were rubbing her arms and feet, as we didn’t know what else to do about it. This situation went on for 15 minutes… Suddenly, blood started coming out of my mother’s mouth. We were terrified and didn’t know what to do. The doctor was still sitting in his chair. When he finally came towards us, it was in anger. He then slapped me.”

Chief medical superintendent Dr Madan Lal confirmed the incident and said, “An investigation into the matter has already been initiated. If found guilty, strict action will be taken against those responsible. The matter has been reported to higher authorities.”
