SR’s Chennai division commissions second Gati-Shakti multimodal cargo terminal at Ponneri

The Chennai Division of Southern Railway commissioned the second Gati-Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Anuppampattu Village, Ponneri in North Chennai. The Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (SMGP), developed by Sical Multimodal and Rail Transport Ltd, will strengthen freight infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity, says a release.
The inaugural run on Wednesday of a 45-BLCA wagon rake from SICAL Multimodal And Rail Transport Limited (Ponneri), covered a distance of 1,389 km with freight earnings of ₹15 lakh to the Green Field Private Freight Terminal GFMK in South Eastern Railway, the release said.
The terminal in Ponneri can handle diverse commodities, including containers, food grains, cement, iron & steel and more. Positioned strategically, SMGP is expected to significantly boost freight capacity with an initial projected throughput of 21 rakes per month, strengthening Chennai Division’s role as a vital logistics hub in the region, says the release.
