Southern Railway to launch India’s first coast-to-coast parcel express train between Royapuram (Chennai) and Mangaluru Central

Southern Railway will launch an intra-zonal coast-to-Coast parcel express train between Royapuram in Chennai and Mangaluru Central. This is first-of-its-kind in Indian Railways, and a significant step toward strengthening regional parcel mobility on Indian Railways, says a release.
The services will be operated on Fridays from Mangaluru Central and on Tuesdays from Royapuram (Chennai). The weekly time-tabled parcel train ensures assured transit schedules, enabling businesses to benefit from timely and dependable deliveries, says a release.
The first service is scheduled to depart on December 12 from Mangaluru Central at 15.10 hrs and reach Royapuram (Chennai) on the next day at 13.30 hrs. The return service is scheduled to depart on December 16 at 15.45 hrs from Royapuram and reach Mangaluru Central at 14.20 hrs on the next day.

The train’s composition will be high capacity parcel vans (10 coaches); luggage-cum-brake van (two). The train will stop at Salem, Erode, Uttukkuli, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikkode, Thalassery, Kannur and Kasaragod, ensuring smooth and efficient loading and unloading across major commercial centers.

An unique feature of the service is earmarking of dedicated parcel coaches to each destination, ensuring organised parcel handling and management. The train accommodates a wide range of commodities including white goods, perishables, consumer products, and industrial materials. Its well-planned, direct connectivity supports uninterrupted logistics flow across important business hubs.
Real-time monitoring is involved, guaranteeing consistent, punctual, and well-coordinated service delivery. This new initiative underscores Southern Railway’s commitment to strengthening regional logistics with reliable, modern, and sustainable transportation solutions.
The service features destination-labelled parcel coaches, ensuring streamlined handling, transparency, and organized parcel movement across all stops, the release said.
