MBBS scholarship scheme at RML Hospital faces delays, ETHealthworld

New Delhi: The scholarship scheme launched by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences & Dr RML Hospital for MBBS students from the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 batches has not benefited a single student, an RTI reply has revealed.

The query under Right to Information Act sought details on how many students from these batches had received financial need-based and academic performance-based scholarships as of Sept 27, 2025. The hospital authorities replied on Oct 23, “No MBBS student has been disbursed any scholarship of this institute so far.”

The programme, introduced this Jan, saw no disbursement despite completed applications and deadlines. At least 14 applications have been submitted, students said. Those from the 2023 and 2024 batches submitted their applications by Jan 28 while the 2021 and 2022 batches applied by May 7. “We were told the process would take a few weeks, but months have passed and there has been no update,” said a student.

As per the institute, the scholarship has two categories. The financial need-based scholarship offers two awards per batch annually of Rs 36,000 each, paid at Rs 3,000 per month. The annual academic and hostel fees paid by the student are also to be reimbursed, provided the person is not receiving tuition reimbursement from any other organisation.

The academic performance-based scholarship also offers two similar awards per batch annually and the same reimbursement benefits.

Calling the delay disappointing, RTI activist Dr Aman Kaushik said, “This scheme is really good, but it’s unfortunate that a central govt medical institute has failed to issue scholarships.”

An RML administrative official said financial implications were involved and dicussions with the Union health ministry were underway.

Students called the delay demotivating, especially for those relying on the aid to continue their studies.
