Devgad Hapus mango arrives early ahead of Diwali, fetches premium in markets

The celebrated Devgad Hapus (Alphonso) mango, known for its rich aroma and taste, has made an early entry into the market this year — much ahead of its usual season between December and January.

The first consignment from the Konkan region reached the Vashi market just in time for Diwali, bringing festive cheer to traders and mango enthusiasts.

Early harvest surprises traders, drives festive demand

Mango grower Prakash Shirsikar from Padavne in Devgad taluka dispatched the first batch nearly two months earlier than usual, marking the beginning of what traders expect to be a strong season. The early arrival of this prized variety has surprised both consumers and traders, who associate the Hapus mango with the summer months.

Though the initial supply is limited and prices are high, buyers eager to taste the first mangoes of the season are showing strong demand. Traders noted that the fruits are naturally ripened within four to five days, ensuring authentic quality and flavour.

Favourable weather, better orchard care aid early ripening

According to growers in Konkan, favourable weather conditions and improved orchard management techniques have enabled the mangoes to ripen earlier this year. The early consignments have fetched premium prices, raising hopes that more farmers will follow suit in the coming weeks.

Local traders said the arrival of the first Devgad Hapus has brought excitement across Maharashtra, signaling the start of another promising mango season for the Konkan belt. In addition to Vashi, some farmers have also sent consignments to the Satara market, expecting higher returns during the festive period.

GI-tagged Alphonso reinforces its premium global identity

The Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and nearby regions are recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, affirming their distinct identity and premium quality on both national and international markets.
