Southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have received persistent rain from overnight (Wednesday evening) until this (Thursday) morning as the South Peninsula awaits the official declaration of the north-east monsoon.
Thiruvananthapuram woke up to cloudy skies and persistent rain associated with the build-up of a low-pressure area likely settling in over the Lakshadweep region by Sunday. Southern parts of the peninsula may continue to receive moderate to heavy rainfall as a preparatory cyclonic circulation hangs above the region.
Focus on south for now
Districts of Tiruneveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Virudhunagar may witness spells of heavy rain, while the adjoining hilly regions of west Kerala bordering Kerala may also receive moderate to heavy rain. It will be some time before the south-east coast (Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu) gets its due.
Overnight rain spells
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Wednesday saw many places over Madhya Maharashtra; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal; Telangana; Konkan and Goa; Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Rayalaseema; Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam; Coastal Karnataka; North Interior Karnataka; South Interior Karnataka; Kerala and Mahe; and Lakshadweep receive varying amounts of moderate to heavy rain..
More rain forecast
In an outlook for the next few days, IMD said very heavy rainfall may lash Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday). Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely at some/isolated places with isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu; Kerala and Mahe; and Lakshadweep for the next five days as the cyclonic circulation descends to the lower levels and sets up the low-pressure area.
East Coast spell
A similar weather may prevail over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema today and tomorrow. Over Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (speeds reaching 30-40 km/h) are expected for today and will continue over the region for the next five days.
