Shipping companies plan big, to announce ₹10 lakh crore investment MOUs at maritime week

MOUs worth ₹10 lakh crore will be announced at the India Maritime Week event in Mumbai later this month, Vijay Kumar secretary (ports, shipping and waterways) said here on Tuesday.
The five day event aims to showcase India’s maritime ambitions and the government is keen to attract investment in the sector by highlighting recent reform and fiscal packages.
Kumar said the MOUs will encompass the entire ecosystem such as shipbuilding ship yards, port modernisation among others. “These are distributed across States and sectors. We have got international commitment. We have investment coming into both public and private sectors,” he said.
The maritime week will have participants from over 100 countries and Ministers from various States. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to attend the event.
The 2023 event too had witnessed signing of MOUs worth ₹10 lakh crore. When asked about its status, Kumar said success rate of grounding these MOUs is very high. Already 60 per cent of them have been activated and it is still ongoing. “Shipping is a long gestation industry. So these are also firm commitments,” he added.
Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the maritime sector of India is aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat and by 2027 we aim to witness large scale investments, world-class infrastructure and enhanced competitiveness. This opens vast avenues for international collaboration including one trillion US dollars roadmap, he added.
