Godrej Agrovet launches herbicide for maize
Godrej Agrovet Ltd (Godrej Agrovet), a diversified agri-business company, has launched a new herbicide specifically designed for maize. Ashitaka, developed in collaboration with ISK Japan, promises to rein in grass and broad-leaved weeds, a major concern for maize farmers.
The product is expected to generate around ₹200 crore in revenue within the next 3-4 years.
“Weed infestation, particularly during the initial growth phases, significantly impacts maize productivity. Ashitaka offers effective weed control,” Rajavelu NK, CEO, Crop Protection Business, Godrej Agrovet, said.
The product is being launched in the key maize growing States of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The product will hit the market from the upcoming rabi season, with the major season expected in kharif next year.
Phased roll-out
Supply for Tamil Nadu is planned from this month, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will receive the supplies in October.
“We will roll this out in other States in phases over the next few months,” he said.
“Ashitaka’s effective weed control in maize reduces crop-weed competition, enabling better use of limited soil moisture and nutrients, and supporting plant health during critical stages like flowering and grain filling,” Anil Choubey, GM – Marketing, Crop Protection Business, Godrej Agrovet, said.
The company said it would launch at least one new crop protection product every year. It is also working on rice insecticides, expected next year, subject to approvals.
