Tour bookings slow down as tensions escalate on borders
Fresh bookings have slowed down amid escalating tensions on India-Pakistan border, travel companies have said.While leisure travellers are adopting a wait and watch stance, companies are restricting travel for essential purposes only.
“We’re seeing a broad trend across the industry where companies are indeed reassessing non-essential travel due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions, economic volatility, and security concerns. The suspension of large public events like IPL matches sends a clear signal that safety and risk management are top priorities right now,” said Jyoti Mayal, former president of Travel Agents Association of India.
Government authorities has extended suspension of commercial operations at 24 airports in North and West India till midnight of May 14. .But with continuing war like situation travellers don’t want to take a chance.
“People fear that they may get stuck at the destination in case of a wider conflict of interest,” said a senior executive of a travel company.
An airline executive said demand has been soft over the last few days and such there is no increase in fares. The closure of airports is also impacting hotels with cancellation and deferrals of events.
Rescheduling and refunds
On their part travel firms are helping customers with rescheduling and refunds.
“Our dedicated customer service and account management teams are supporting our business travellers. To ensure our customers receive the support they need, we are prioritising all trips departing within the next 24 hours,” said Sunny Sodhi, managing director of FCM Travel India.
“Our priority is to support our users during such disruptions. We are offering full refunds including convenience fees without any deductions to all affected passengers, said Aloke Bajpai,Group CEO, ixigo.
