Tea prices up at Coonoor auctions on lower offerings

Lower arrivals have buoyed tea prices of select varieties in Coonoor auctions with high-priced teas being dearer by ₹4 to ₹5 and more in line with quality.

In sale 5, the quantity offered in CTC was 10,69,278 kg with a sales percentage of 93, while the offered quantities in dust was 3,91,540 kg, witnessing 85 per cent sales. Traders anticipate lower crop arrivals in the weeks ahead because of climatic conditions in the production areas.  

Global Tea Auctioneers said better liquoring sorts in leaf CTC were dearer by ₹2 to ₹3, while better medium sorts had fair demand and sold barely steady to occasionally dearer by ₹1 to ₹2. The mediums and plainer sorts sold barely steady around last levels. Generally a fair demand was noticed in the overall CTC leaf sales.

Orthodox leaf dearer

In leaf orthodox, the primary whole leaf grades were dearer by ₹3 to ₹4 and more at times in line with quality, occasionally some lots sold lower by ₹3 to ₹4. The brokens were lower by ₹2 to ₹3.

The better medium sorts in dust orthodox were lower by ₹3 to 4. The mediums and plainer sorts had less demand and sold lower by ₹2 to ₹3 and more at times with fair withdrawals.  

The primary orthodox dust grades were generally lower by ₹8 to 10.
