Surgical Blade Left in Patient’s Body, ETHealthworld

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday suspended an orthopaedic doctor and a staff nurse after a surgical blade was found inside a patient’s body following a procedure at Kakinada Government Area Hospital. The suspended officials were identified as orthopaedic doctor Satyasagat and staff nurse Padmavati for dereliction of duty.

Acting on the directions of health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav, director of health K V N Chakradhar Babu issued suspension orders. The minister took serious note of the incident after the hospital superintendent’s explanation was found unsatisfactory and ordered a comprehensive inquiry. A probe by district authorities confirmed that both officials acted irresponsibly during surgery.

The patient, who had suffered serious injuries in a road accident, underwent orthopaedic surgery earlier, during which a steel rod was implanted in his leg. On Nov 27, a screw was removed in a follow-up surgery. However, during this procedure, a surgical blade was inadvertently left inside the patient’s body and the wound stitched. When the patient complained of severe pain, an X-ray revealed the blade inside.>
