LLR Hospital Launches New Plastic Surgery Unit for Facial Reconstruction, ET HealthWorld
Kanpur: Patients requiring facial reconstruction following cancer or other medical conditions can now receive treatment locally, without having to visit Lucknow, Delhi, or Mumbai. Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, operated by Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College (GSVM), has launched a dedicated plastic surgery department with two specialist surgeons.
Although JK Cancer Institute treats cancer patients locally, many prefer GSVM Medical College’s LLR Hospital. The facility offers modern treatments for various cancers, including breast and oral cancers. However, oral cancer operations frequently leave noticeable facial marks. These post-surgical marks can significantly impact facial features.
To address these post-operative concerns, LLR has established a specialised plastic surgery unit. According to Dr Sanjay Kala, GSVM Medical College principal, the surgical team has added another plastic surgeon to their unit. The unit currently functions with two plastic surgeons, including the skilled Dr Prem Shankar.
Dr Shankar explained that current procedures involve tissue attachment. He said that earlier techniques used pectoralis major myo cutaneous (PMMC) flaps for oral cancer patients which required chest tissue removal. Forehead flaps were also previously used. Currently, they employ ALT (antero lateral thigh) flaps using thigh tissue which contains fat similar to cheek composition, along with nerves, veins, and other tissues.
