KGMU to open state-of-the-art bone marrow transplant unit by March end, ET HealthWorld
Lucknow: The state-of-the-art under-construction bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is expected to be completed by the end of March, said Prof Shailendra Kumar, head of haematology department, on Saturday.
The facility, funded through Rs 2.75 crore in corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions from Aditya Birla Capital Foundation and CanKids, is located at Shatabdi Hospital and has been under construction for three months.
The unit will feature an 8-bed intensive care unit equipped with HEPA filters, along with advanced equipment. A dedicated team of haematologists, transplant surgeons, oncologists and specialised nurses will oversee patient care.
Strict hygiene protocols will be implemented. Additionally, the unit will provide comprehensive post-transplant care, including blood transfusions, pain management, rehabilitation and psychological counselling.
KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand emphasised that the unit would help treat conditions like leukaemia and thalassaemia, offering more affordable transplant services compared to private hospitals.
Currently, UP has only one public sector BMT facility at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). “The unit aims to expand access to critical transplant services, benefiting patients from the state and neighbouring regions,” she added.
