Cyclone Ditwah weakens, comes closest to Chennai by noon

Rain and thundershowers from the remnant deep depression from cyclone Ditwah were concentrated around and north of Chennai on Monday morning.

Cyclone Ditwah weakened a round into a deep depression midnight last night and lay centred over over south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of west-central Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh coasts.
The remnant was located about 50 km east-southeast of Chennai; 130 km north-east of Puducherry; 150 km north-east of Cuddalore; and 200 km south-southeast of Nellore.
Tracking further north
The minimum distance of the centre of deep depression from north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts was about 40 km. The closest the system will be centred along the Chennai latitude will be 30 km by noon of today (Monday), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in an early morning update.
The deep depression is likely to move slowly northwards parallel to north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts and weaken another round into a depression during the course of the day today.
Heavy rain
Heavy rainfall is likely over north Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Telangana on Monday; over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Rayalaseema both today and tomorrow (Monday and Tuesday).
Thunderstorms with lightning will stalk over Tamil Nadu; North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam; and Rayalaseema for three days from today (Monday); over South Interior Karnataka on Monday; over Kerala and Mahe on Tuesday and Wednesday; and over North interior Karnataka today (Monday).
Fishermen alert
The IMD has advised total suspension of fishing operations in coastal areas of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts today (Monday). Fishermen are also advised not to venture into south-west Bay; Gulf of Mannar; Comorin area; along and off Tamil Nadu; Puducherry; Sri Lanka coasts; and adjoining west-central Bay and along and off Andhra Pradesh coast till tomorrow (Tuesday).
