Cyclone Ditwah begins to weaken off TN-Puducherry coast

Satellite pictures by midmorning on Sunday suggested cyclone Ditwah may have started to weaken off Puducherry-Tamil Nadu coasts.

Cyclone Ditwah lay closest to Karaikal on the Tamil Nadu coast early this (Sunday) morning after slowing down on its track over the waters of south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts. Latest satellites suggested it may already have started to weaken a round.
It has left Sri Lanka behind on the track, with its current bearing assessed at 170 km north-northeast of Jaffna in northern-most Sri Lanka, and 120 km north-east of Vedaranniyam on the Tamil Nadu coast early morning.
Puducherry, Chennai next
Its next destination on is Puducherry (130 km away to north-northeast) and Chennai (220 km to north-northeast). By original assessment, the cyclone should have reached the Puducherry-Chennai coast early this morning.
The IMD stuck to its projected cyclone track to nearly north and running parallel to north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts until tomorrow (Monday). It will be centred over the seas within a minimum distance of 70 km and 30 km from the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by this (Sunday) noon and evening, respectively, it added.
Weakening a round
The IMD had said early in the morning the cyclone is expected to weaken as a deep depression after it passes the Puducherry coast by noon, and further weaken as a depression by the time it passes Chennai coast.
Rainfall outlook
Moderate rainfall is forecast at most places with heavy to very heavy rain at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated placesover north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the course of today (Sunday). It will be isolated heavy over north interior Tamil Nadu. Thereafter, rainfall amounts would decrease to light to moderate at many places with heavy rainfallat isolated places tomorrow (Monday) over north Tamil Nadu.

As for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, light to moderate rainfall at most places for today (Sunday) with heavy to very heavy at a few places. It would scale down to light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places on Monday. Over Kerala and Mahe, it would belight to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places.
