Massive Crackdown Leads to 300+ Arrests of Fake Doctors in Hyderabad, ET HealthWorld
Hyderabad: With chief minister A Revanth Reddy assuring officials that the menace of fake doctors will be eradicated, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Telangana State Medical Council (TGMC) plan to intensify the crackdown. With several raids on unqualified persons practising medicine, the total number of FIRs has now reached 400, while over 300 arrests have been made so far, said officials.
Officials said nearly 50 unqualified persons were arrested across various districts in the past month alone. The latest arrest occurred on Monday when coordinated efforts from IMA, TGMC, and the Drugs Control Authority (DCA) led to the nabbing of an unqualified practitioner from the Uppal area of the city.
“We have been pushing for action against fake doctors and quacks, and now both the state chief minister and governor have recognised this as an evil that needs to be wiped out. The latest statement from the chief minister that action will be taken against quacks and protection of medical professionals will be ensured is a welcome step,” said IMA Anti-Quackery Committee chairman Dr Prabhu Kumar Chalagalli, adding that many unqualified practitioners were already sent to jail following the FIRs.
Authorities said at least 200 unqualified practitioners have been sent to jail so far. “In most places, we are finding support from the police, who are taking immediate action. Many cases reached courts as the police are making efforts to file the chargesheets as soon as possible,” said TGMC chairman Dr G Srinivas.
Meanwhile, the coordination of all three committees is making the cases against the unqualified professionals foolproof with sections under the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, said officials.
