Coimbatore Hospital Ordered to Pay 15 Lakh for Medical Negligence in Hysterectomy Case, ET HealthWorld
Coimbatore: The district consumer disputes redressal commission has directed a private hospital to pay a compensation of Rs15 lakh to a woman who suffered severe bladder damage because of medical negligence during a hysterectomy. The woman had to undergo several surgeries in two months because of the medical error.
According to an official source, a woman from Kinathukadavu went to a medical centre with abdominal pain in April 2019. “She underwent a full body checkup. She was told that it was better to remove her uterus as it was weak. On November 26, 2019, she went to a private hospital in the city and consulted the chief medical officer. They recommended an immediate surgery, costing Rs40,000. The surgery was performed the same day.”
After the procedure, the woman began experiencing urine leakage. She was later informed that her urinary tube was damaged during the surgery and another surgery was required to insert a stent. “She agreed for the stent surgery, costing Rs10,000, as she was in severe pain. The corrective procedure in December, however, didn’t address the issue,” the source said.
As the doctors involved in her surgery also worked at a govt hospital, she was subsequently admitted there for further treatment. However, the treatment she received failed to resolve the urine leakage issue, the source said
She subsequently approached Kongunad Hospital, where doctors performed a corrective surgery and informed her that her urinary tubes were severely damaged and would likely need replacement in the future.
The woman filed a petition with the district consumer disputes redressal commission. In its order, commission president R Thangavel and members P Marimuthu and G Suguna stated that negligence and deficiency of service on the part of the doctors were established. The commission directed the chief medical officer and four doctors of the private hospital to jointly pay Rs15 lakh to the complainant as a compensation and another Rs5,000 towards the cost of legal proceedings.
